Dean Nelson Keynote | Local Author Showcase 2026

Register

In celebration of the 60th Annual Local Author Showcase, Library Shop and the San Diego Public Library are proud to present Dean Nelson as the keynote speaker for this year’s gathering! If you are a writer or passionate about the literary world, we hope that you will join us.

This celebratory event is open to the public and is an annual showcase of working authors who have published in the past calendar year. The celebration will open with Nelson’s keynote speech.

A cornerstone of literary life in San Diego, DEAN NELSON is the host of the annual Writers Symposium by the Sea. Founding director of the journalism program at PLNU, he has also nurtured the next generation of talented journalists in San Diego. Across a long career, he has interviewed countless icons of literature, from fiction writers like Amy Tan, Luis Alberto Urrea, Anthony Doerr and Ray Bradbury, to beloved nonfiction writers like Anne Lamott and Bill McKibben. A nearly complete list of those interviews can be found here. His own books speak to a lifetime of developing this craft.

Nelson’s two latest books in the Talking to Writers series mine his rich history of work with the most talented authors of this generation, and his keynote speech will offer words of inspiration to both working and aspiring writers alongside those who love the craft. This will be a brief presentation of around 20 – 30 minutes.

Registration is encouraged, attendance is free, and copies of Nelson’s books will be available for purchase — with the chance to get your copy signed by the author himself.

About the Books:

Talking to Writers: The Craft of Fiction and Talking to Writers: The Craft of Nonfiction offer encouragement, guidance, advice and insight to working writers, drawn from the author’s own life and his rich body of interviews with some of the most talented working writers of our time. Hear from Elizabeth Gilbert about humility, or learn what Nick Hornby has to share about dialogue. Whether you’re a writer looking for your next idea, or a new author wondering if your writing will have an impact, these are the books for you. Both titles will be available for sale on the day of the event. If you would like, you can order your copy from Library Shop in advance for pickup on the day of the Local Author Showcase.
