For decades, a building on Washington Street served as the Mission Hills library.
That page turned back in 2019 when the city opened the Mission Hills — Hillcrest/Knox Branch Library about a half-mile to the east. Since then, the building was vacant, but as of Monday, the community is looking forward to starting a new chapter.
The city’s library system has transformed the space into a for-profit new-book bookstore and event space, featuring everything from kids’ books to cookbooks to library-related items — the new Mission Hills Library Shop offers pretty much anything and everything a bookworm could want.

Foundation CEO Patrick Stewart told NBC 7 on Monday that, at a time when libraries have been facing budget cutbacks, he believes the shop is a win-win for the city and the community.
“It’s an opportunity to repurpose a city building beautifully in a neighborhood that really, really is excited about seeing this activated in this fashion, bringing books, community, families together, and then, of course, being able to support our San Diego Public Library,” Stewart said. “Nothing better than that.”
