20 ways we’ve supported the library in 2022

As we reflect on our first 20 years, one thing that remains as true today as it did then is our love of and commitment to supporting San Diego communities at all branches of the city’s Public Library system. In fact, it has only grown more and more, year after year.

Along the way, we met wonderful people and made many cherished memories. We also saw the libraries grow, and we’re honored to have been part of that growth that brings people together and closer to their community libraries.

And we did it IN the community, as all of this was made possible by the terrific supporters that continue to be by our side every step of the way!

As we reflect one last time on our 20 years advocating for the betterment and future of San Diego Public Libraries, we want to share how, with your support, we were able to support your public libraries in 2022.

1. Advocated for the library

Our advocacy helped thousands of kids across San Diego.

2. Moved the Library Master Plan forward

We kicked off community listening sessions to create a Library Master Plan that launches San Diego libraries into the future.

3. Addressed long-term library funding issues

We sponsored the Libraries and Parks for All initiative to help ensure adequate long-term library funding.

4. Helped grow and preserve one-of-a-kind spaces like the Hervey Family Rare Book Room

We helped secure new additions that make the collection even richer.

5. Brought Kanopy video streaming to the library

Thousands of hard-to-find videos are now available to library patrons for free.

6. Supported LGBTQIA+ and inclusion programming

7. Library Shop SD author talks

We were proud to bring authors like Bradford Pearson and Daniel James Brown to library audiences.

8. Helped increase public access to the arts

We helped support local artists and broaden access to public art and culture.

9. Helped bring conflict resolution programs to the library

10. Organized the Matchbook Story Contest

San Diego’s quirkiest writing contest and the Shorties award show brought attention to local writers and raised $5,000 to support libraries.

11. Supported My First Library Card

This successful program helps get the youngest learners into the library and reading.

12. Increased access to technology

We supported SD Access 4 All efforts to provide free WiFi and internet access at libraries.

13. Supported Listeners’ Advisory: The San Diego Public Libary podcast

14. Brought families to the library to Find Odi @ SDPL

In July, thousands of families visited their library to find the hidden Odi, and more than 100 found Odi at every San Diego Public Library.

15. Helped launch Career Exploration Days and career resources

16. Supported Call to Serve: Clara E. Breed and the Japanese Incarceration

We supported this program which reflected on Japanese American experiences during World War II and after the war by exploring themes of social justice, activism, and the power of the written word.

17. Helped adults earn high school degrees

18. Helped get people back in the classroom, back to work, and back to learning

19. Worked with our partners to create more impact

Thank you to our corporate and organizational partners who helped make our impact this year possible.

20. Better informed the public about the library’s impact

This year, we updated the Library Foundation’s website to better communicate the library’s impact and keep supporters informed on how they can support and advocate.
