20 things we’re looking forward to

What better way to celebrate our 20th anniversary than by looking forward to the next 20 years? Here’s a glimpse into the things we’ll be able to celebrate together as we continue investing in our community, creating places to grow, and – most importantly – having fun across San Diego together:

1. Connect and listen to the library community through More than Words: A Community Vision for Libraries, part of our Library Master Plan.

2. Secure $40M to $45M in additional funding per year to support critical library and park needs via the 2024 Libraries & Parks for All ballot initiative.

3. Expand the Ocean Beach Library for the communities of Ocean Beach and Sunset Cliffs.

4. Open a new Oak Park Library for the communities of Oak Park, Webster, and Chollas Creek.

5. Open a new San Carlos Library for San Carlos, Del Cerro, Allied Gardens, and Lake Murray communities.

6. Cut the ribbon in 2026 to open the under-construction Pacific Highlands Ranch Library.

7. Welcome a modernized and updated Performance Annex at the City Heights/Weingart Library.

8. Celebrate the work of Media Arts Center San Diego interns working with the City of San Diego and San Diego Public Library.

9. Highlight the impact of expanded programs and collections resulting from LibrariesTranformSD advocacy.

10. Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Central Library @ Joan ^ Irwin Jacobs Common on Sept. 302023.

11. Establish the Microbusiness Center at the Central Library @ Joan ^ Irwin Jacobs Common.

12. Help more San Diegans learn to read through READ/San Diego and inspire kids to become lifelong learners in Families for Literacy.

13. Toast the next graduating class of Career Online High School and hear their inspiring stories.

14. Visit the next great exhibit at the Central Library Art Gallery and gallery spaces in branches across the city.

15. Find library mascot Odi the Coyote at next July’s Where’s Odi @ SDPL program.

16. Open additional IDEA Labs in library branches across the city.

17. Expand community partnerships, like the one with the National Conflict Resolution Center, in communities serviced by public libraries.

18. Check in on the widely successful My First Library Card program that’s helped inspire a 395% increase in children’s library card sign-ups.

19. Connect with the next great author the Library Shop SD will bring to town.

20. Support the next innovative and impactful program San Diego librarians will champion to help the community.
